Fast Food at First Sight

April 16, 2008

Icarus Rising, formerly Fortune for a Quarter, has been jamming their Pop/Rock/Reggae love for a couple/few years now around DC and I have to call attention to, not only their unique sound, but choice of song topics. Fast Food at First Sight, a song about Noah Siegel’s love affair with McDonald’s will certainly get your attention and, most likely, stick with you as that random song about, well, someone’s love affair with McDonald’s. Though the overall sound is in desperate need of a producer and some Pop flavor it has a charming way of telling it how it is. I will be the first to proclaim that it’s not hot if it ain’t pop, but there is something refreshing about songwriters developing songs about the everyday and speaking directly to our sense of routine rather than our sense of fantasy.

Though Siegel will say Fast Food at First Site would be the band’s break out hit off their second effort CD, I think there is much substance in the song Retro Girl. Again, speaking directly to the life many Washingtonians lead each day, it calls attention to the over-stimulation we each encounter knowingly or unknowingly every hour.

In any case, the band’s description of “Barenaked Ladies meets Sublime” is very accurate. With a bit more intentional studio time with a producer that can vibe out the vision and sound of this band they have potential to be the next Virginia Coalition, or, well, Barenaked Ladies.

The best example of the band’s potential is heard on Seashells and Depakote. With a string section, double guitar in areas and some more male and/or female bg vocals this could give Dashboard and Secondhand Serenade a run.

Anyway, keep watching this band, and after that, watch them some more. And if all else fails, you can use some of their tracks for your next iMovie to YouTube concoction.
